XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012) (PC) (Firaxis)
Now that I've finished Dishonored I finally have some time to check out the full version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. My first, surely doomed playthrough attempt is with Iron Man mode turned on (i.e. the game autosaves all the time so you can never reload if things go bad), and as expected this is a very tense and challenging game even on Normal difficulty. Although some things have indeed been streamlimed (no action points or multiple bases, etc.), there's still *a lot* of depth and sophistication to the gameplay mechanics in XCOM which you simply don't see in many other modern games. Just as with Dishonored, then, this is clearly a labor of love from a developer intent on bringing a classic genre back without making unnecessary sacrifices just to please the casual market.
