X-COM is back; there's just no other way to put it. The recently released demo of the upcoming 2012 remake includes every major gameplay element from the 1993 Microprose classic - i.e. turn-based combat, base building, weapons research and agonizing permadeaths - and even throws in some additional features such as skill trees for individual units. Whether the smaller changes (the reduced squad size and having only a single base to work with, for example) will ultimately turn out to have been good design decisions or not remains to be seen, of course. However, the demo gives the impresion of a developer who have thought long and hard about the trade-off between accessibility and complexity without ever abandoning what makes X-COM the series we know and love.

At this point I've read countless previews and news articles about this game since it was first announced (and have obviously already pre-ordered a PC copy on Steam), but after playing the demo I simply can't wait to get my creepy Chrysalid hands on the full version...
