BREAKING THE RULES - MOVIE 2025 | Full Dubbed Trailer | RELEASED JUNE 26 IN THEATERS
The film Breaking the Rules is based on the story of Roya Mahboob, one of Afghanistan's first female CEOs and co-founder of the Digital Citizen Fund. She became known worldwide for founding robotics clubs for Afghan girls in an extremely conservative and oppressive social context. Her story served as a direct basis for the script.
Roya Mahboob also participates as a co-writer and creative consultant, ensuring that the events portrayed are faithful to the reality of young Afghan women who defied tradition to seek education and autonomy.
Fleabag creator and No Time to Die screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge has a surprise cameo as an international journalist. Her scene was only revealed during test screenings in the United States.
Before hitting theaters, “Breaking the Rules” was screened in special screenings at the Sundance and Telluride festivals, earning praise for the emotional strength of the story and the moving performances.
Despite being set in cities such as Herat and Kabul, filming took place in Hungary and Morocco. This was necessary for security reasons, since the presence of an international crew filming a film with feminist themes would be unfeasible in the country today.
The production hired Afghan women living in Europe as refugees to collaborate on the creation of authentic costumes and accurate cultural settings. This care increased the visual and emotional fidelity of the film.
Composer Jeff Beal (known for House of Cards) worked with musicians from the Middle East and South Asia to integrate instruments typical of Afghan culture into the soundtrack, such as the rubab and the tabla, creating a deeply immersive sound.
Specialized critics in the US have already pointed to the film as a potential candidate for the 2026 Oscars, especially in the categories of Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay and Best Score.
During screenings in the US, the film received an “A” grade on CinemaScore, which indicates massive approval from the public. Many especially praised the message of hope and the strength of the main character.
Initially, the national title was going to be "As Rebeldes do Saber", but the distributor Paris Filmes opted for "Quebrando Regras" to bring more impact and maintain the essence of defiance against the system — one of the central themes of the film.
