00:00 Ammonites
While figuring out the best way to tackle this (not necessarily difficult) boss battle, I came across an odd glitch that I wasn't really able to consistently replicate.
It involves one of the Ammonites not chasing Ryu's party in the pre-battle mini-game, which as you can see causes the Ammonite to just stay there outside the screen when the fight begins. Ryu and Garr are also unable to fit on the screen.
I don't know if it's just me, but the Ammonites seem a whole lot aggressive this way, quickly taking out Ryu and even Rei way faster than they usually do. Weird?
00:43 Manmo
There's some talk about how early Rei's Weretiger (+any character under Berserk status) will begin attacking the party if Influence hasn't been used right away. Some players claim it's 1 turn, some claim it's as many as 2 turns that you needn't worry about using Influence, which would apparently make Weretiger extremely effective in brief battles.
In this video however, Rei proves the internet's most seasoned BoF players wrong by immediately attacking Ryu the next turn he transforms into the Weretiger form. Luckily, Rei has the Blizzard Dagger to penetrate Manmo's ice weakness and Ryu has double Ivory Charms. The attack does naught to the lv. 1 Ryu!
01:13 ArchMage
Before I came up with the reliable and successful strategy of using Rei as the Resist-bait at point of attack formation and Garr/Ryu as attackers to defeat the Arch Mage, my strategy looked like this - Rei was one of the attackers instead, and he had to add his damage in Weretiger form to bolster Ryu's Berserk damage, and since he was at the point of AF he would constantly die to Mind Sword in spite of his high avoid.
In this short video, Garr laughs at all laws of probability by dodging three Mind Swords in a row. Garr has 4% natural dodge, 9% with D'lonzo. This has a 0,0729% chance of happening, or once every 1371 attempts.
On the contrary, Rei's much higher 35% dodge fails to kick in, and his death signifies the failure of this attempt (which may have ended up successful).
03:49 Arch Mage again
Since Garr wasn't attacking at all, any other character could've performed his role in the strategy showcased in the previous video. It seemed logical to replace him with Nina who has 8% more dodge than him and could thus contribute a tiny bit more to the reliability of this strat. It never worked out in the end, and I eventually switched to a more reliable strat which you can find in the Arch Mage battle recorded for this video series (see playlist if you haven't).
Anyway, this one attempt came extremely close to success until one thing happened... and then another thing happened; yeah...
07:11 Myria
Though I did my best to come up with a Myria strat that wouldn't fail very often, plenty of things could go wrong at more than one stage of the fight.
One of the risky parts was when Garr got rid of his double Ivory Charm to equip two pairs of Speed Boots, outspeeding Myria and pre-empting her dangerous magic, most notably Holocaust, with full-party and single-target item healing. After taking several Barrier boosts from Force Armour, Garr could tank most of Myria's magic, excepting only Mjollnir, with its beastly base power, and Death, which tends to connect often when you lack any protection to it.
Mjollnir was the spell that went through here, and it targeted Garr and not Rei (Rei is targeted a little more often at the point of normal formation). Rei did have a chance to solo this fight still, but without any way to be healed to withstand the next Holocaust at full HP, he didn't last.
08:49 One More Myria
Remember when I said BoF3's (and I strongly suspect also BoF4's) turn order/speed differences cannot be trusted? I've noted several times during this run that even a 10 speed character can go after a 0 speed one for seemingly no apparent reason.
In this video, this anomaly rears its ugly head at the worst possible moment, preventing Garr from restoring the party's (actually just Garr himself) HP after a nasty Sirocco strike. Myria gets the first strike for no reason at all - what will she do? Holocaust the wounded Garr of course!
Rei solos here again, does he succeed? I ended up not keeping this attempt because of some other things going wrong earlier in the fight, as those made the recording exceptionally long in contrast to my uploaded run.
Well, I suppose -now- that is all for this challenge run; thanks for your attention.
