Bright Lights of Svetlov is essentially about the Kramatorsk Radiological Incident, although it takes place in a fictional town, Svetlov. The premise of the game is you play as different characters in an apartment block in the USSR, in the period starting in 1980 going all the way to 1989. Life is pretty boring and bland, not much is going on, and the day-to-day toil is almost mind-numbing (that’s what it’s supposed to be, as it’s true-to-form how many Russian citizens lived during that period in history).

However, there is something strange happening in the apartments, with people getting sick and dying over time, for no explainable reason. I will not spoil the story for you, but let me tell you it is worth sticking it out for – especially since the game is only a few hours long – when you can get it to work, that is.

I say that, because I played the PS4 version, and I got stuck. Not mentally, like literally. I got to a certain point where you’re playing as a certain character, and she is supposed to pick up a key to go to the underground garage of the apartments to meet with someone…and the prompt to pick up the key doesn’t appear. At all. Even when approaching it from different angles, it doesn’t work. I started the game over again, from the beginning, restarted my PS4 deleted the save – hell, even deleted the game and re-installed it…and nothing worked.

I did try to contact the developers through Keymailer, but they informed me I’d have to contact the developers directly…and trying to do so through Twitter was a bust, as I was unable to contact them because I don’t subscribe to Twitter Blue.

I thought long and hard about what SHOULD go into this review – and from what I’ve seen from others’ gameplay, it should not be a game everyone avoids. HOWEVER, I wanted to be honest with everyone and tell them about the game-breaking glitch I encountered that did not let me progress any further.

As I said, I’ve seen Gameplay from others playing this – more specifically on their Xbox Series X, so if you want to check this game out, buy it on the Xbox store (because their refund policy is much more consumer friendly than Playstation’s). Not a console-specific statement, just stating facts.
The game is $9.99 on Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo storefronts, but as I said previously, I recommend Xbox just because if you encounter the same inability to play past a certain point, Microsoft Customer Support is much more likely to administer a refund that Playstation Gamer Support (I know this from personal experience).

Developed and Published by Sometimes You, Bright Lights of Svetlov is a Narrative Walking Sim that released September 14th, 2021 for MS Windows, and August 11th, 2023 for Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo Switch. For this review video, I played the PS4 version on my PS5 via backwards compatibility.

Disclosure: I received a free review copy of Bright Lights of Svetlov from the Publisher through Keymailer.co – thanks so much, I really appreciate it!
