Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II (Arcade) Playthrough
Playthrough of Banpresto's 1993 side-scrolling shooter for the Arcades, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II.
Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II shifts from the vertical-scrolling gameplay of its predecessor to a side-scrolling shooter format, placing a stronger emphasis on competitive play. Player characters remain fixed based on their side—Player 1 controls Silvie, while Player 2 takes on the role of Nexx.
The game features a total of 10 levels, divided across three difficulty settings: Beginner, Medium, and Expert. Only the final stage is shared across all modes. Unlike traditional shooters, progression is based on a score attack system, requiring players to reach a designated score target displayed at the top-center of the screen before time runs out. Failing to meet the quota results in an immediate game over. However, enemies continue to appear even after reaching the target, with stage completion only occurring once the timer expires. This rule also applies to boss encounters, making survival and efficient scoring key to success.
In cooperative mode, the combined scores of both players contribute to the target, promoting teamwork. A competitive 1P vs 2P mode is also available, allowing players to select one of nine stages (excluding the final level) and battle for the highest score within the time limit. The winner is rewarded with extended play.
Transformation mechanics remain integral, with power-ups allowing players to switch between Fighter and Gerwalk modes. However, Battroid mode only appears briefly when activating the screen-clearing bomb, which unleashes a rapid missile barrage. Collecting additional power-ups in the same form increases attack strength, and once fully powered, excess items convert into 3,000-point bonuses. The Armored Valkyrie form from the previous game is absent, streamlining the transformation system while maintaining the series' signature high-speed action.
