Bugatti set off an avalanche of buzz when it revealed its La Voiture Noire at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Not long after, news outlets reported that the Noire had been purchased by an unnamed buyer for the highest new-car price ever — $18.7 million. So far, the identity of the buyer remains a mystery. We think that’s only fitting, as this rare souper-coupe has more in common with the Batmobile than luxury legends like the Rolls-Royce Phantom or the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

Unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the Bugatti La Voiture Noire, which translates literally to "the black car" was actually designed in memory and as a tribute to the Type 57SC Atlantic. Just four units of the Type 57SC Atlantic were ever made, with a 3.3-liter engine that produced 125 horsepower and a top speed of 95 mph.

One of the four units went to English banker, Victor Rothschild, and it was subsequently known as the "Rothschild Atlantic". The other went to France, specifically to Jacques Holzschuh who went on to sell his "Holzschuh Atlantic" to a car collector, who tragically died in the car. The third Atlantic went to renowned US designer Ralph Lauren – he was the second owner after R B Pope, and hence it got called the "Pope Atlantic". The final Atlantic got built for Jean Bugatti, the son of founder, Ettore. Little is sadly known of this incredible car, except for the fact it has been missing since WWII and is worth just over a staggering $100m. It must be somewhere.
