Abstract: Summer undergraduate research experiences are vital in fostering academic and professional growth, particularly for faculty and students at smaller institutions. This presentation focuses on the development and success of the Dynamical Systems Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at Ithaca College. We will outline the process of securing REU funding, including the challenges and strategies for small departments to stand out in competitive funding landscapes. Attendees will gain insights into the importance of summer research opportunities for student development and learn how we structured our thematic REU program to maximize its impact. Key aspects such as project design, student recruitment, mentorship, and program evaluation will be discussed. Additionally, former REU participants will share their perspectives on how the experience contributed to their academic and career trajectories.
