Call of Duty: WWII is a first-person shooter video game developed by Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision. It is the fourteenth main installment in the Call of Duty series and was released worldwide on November 3, 2017 for Microsoft Windows and the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.
On June 6, 1944, hours before the D-Day invasion, Private First Class Ronald “Red” Daniels (Brett Zimmerman) of the United States Army's 1st Infantry Division writes to his wife Hazel. Serving alongside him is Jewish-American Private First Class Robert Zussman (Jonathan Tucker), photographer Private Drew Stiles (Kevin Coubal), and Queens native and veteran Technician Fifth Grade Frank Aiello (Jeff Schine). Leading the platoon is Technical Sergeant William Pierson (Josh Duhamel), and First Lieutenant Joseph Turner (Jeffrey Pierce). After hearing a speech by Colonel Davis (Matt Riedy), the commander of the unit, the platoon storms Omaha Beach and comes under heavy machine gun fire. After crawling through barbed wire and sand, the platoon makes it towards the bunkers where the machine guns are stationed. While clearing out the last bunker, Zussman is stabbed in the abdomen by a German soldier with a bayonet. With Zussman unable to walk, Daniels carries him through the battlefield to a field hospital. Zussman is then treated for his wound while Daniels and the surviving soldiers destroy a German artillery cannon. After destroying the artillery, Daniels sees Zussman again and the two promise to fight together until the end.
Seven weeks later, Zussman recovers and rejoins the platoon in preparation for Operation Cobra. While Daniels and others are discussing Pierson's tough treatment of the platoon aboard a Sherman tank, tank commander Staff Sergeant Augustine Perez (Christian Lanz) explains that Pierson was held responsible for a massacre that happened during The Battle of Kasserine Pass early in the war. The platoon is suddenly ambushed by Stuka dive bombers, and German infantry and armor attack. After the battle, Colonel Davis is informed by the French Resistance about a German armored train carrying V-2 rockets refueling near Argentan. Daniels and his platoon then team up with British intelligence officer Arthur Crowley (David Alpay) to stop the train. Daniels and Zussman derail the train and are extracted to their platoon by the Resistance's leader Rousseau (Bella Dayne). Rousseau leads Crowley, Daniels, Zussman, and Pierson into Paris, where they sabotage a German garrison commanded by SS Polizeifuhrer Heinrich using documents obtained from the train wreck. With Daniels’s platoon providing support, Rousseau and Crowley infiltrate the garrison disguised as Nazi officials in order to gather explosives in order to destroy the garrison’s gates. The plan is almost foiled when Rousseau's barely succeeds in killing Heinrich and the platoon successfully drives out the Germans.
Right after the liberation of Paris, the platoon is fighting in Aachen, Germany. Daniels receives a letter from his wife that she is pregnant. When raiding a hotel, the platoon finds German civilians hiding in the basement. While evacuating them, a little girl named Anna goes missing. Daniels goes back for her, but when he finds her, German soldiers storm the complex. The platoon manages to fend off the Germans and capture the hotel. Turner then orders the platoon to escort the escaping civilians, to Pierson's disagreement, who wants the civilians to escape without their escort. The two then argue, but Pierson relents and the platoon proceeds to clear the streets of Germans to help the escort. After the streets are cleared and the civilians are being loaded onto a truck, two German soldiers appear and begin shooting at the truck, killing Anna's older sister. In the confusion, Pierson disobeys Turner's orders and signals the truck to leave without an escort and the platoon to move back to the hotel. Turner then watches as the truck drives off.
