Call of Duty: WWII is a first-person shooter video game developed by Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision. It is the fourteenth primary installment in the Call of Duty series and was released worldwide on November 3, 2017 for Microsoft Windows and the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.
The story opens with a montage of the Nazi conquest of Western Europe. After the attack at Pearl Harbor, Texas native Ronald “Red” Daniels joins the United States 1st Infantry Division.
On June 6, 1944, just hours before the D-Day invasion, Daniels writes to his brother Paul. Serving alongside him is Jewish-American Robert Zussman, photographer Drew Stiles, and Queens native and veteran Frank Aiello. Leading the platoon is the cruel Sgt. William Pierson, and Lt. Joseph Turner. After hearing a speech by Colonel Davis, the commander of the unit, the platoon storms Omaha Beach, and they come under heavy machine gun fire. After crawling through barbed wire and sand, the platoon make it towards the bunkers where the machine guns are stationed. While clearing out the last bunker, Zussman is stabbed in the abdomen by a German soldier with a bayonet. With Zussman unable to walk, Daniels carries him through the battlefield to a field hospital.
Seven weeks later, in Marigny, Manche, France, Zussman recovers and rejoins the platoon as they prepare to attack a German outpost. However, the platoon is ambushed by Stuka bombers, and German infantry men begin to attack. During the bloody battle that ensues, Daniels learns from tank commander Perez that Pierson was demoted for being held responsible for a massacre that happened early in the war, which is why he’s so hard on his soldiers. After the battle, the platoon team up with British intelligence officer Crowley, who is looking to target an armored German supply train, carrying V2 Rockets. After sabotaging the train, Zussman and Daniels are rescued by a French Resistance fighter named Rosseau, who leads them back to their platoon.
Rosseau leads Crowley, Daniels, Zussman, and Pierson into Paris, where she plans to attack a German garrison. She reveals that the Nazis killed her entire family, including her son. Rosseau and Crowley enter the German Headquarters, disguised as Nazi officials. After meeting with a British sleeper agent, Rosseau kills the Nazi officer who ordered the execution of her son. Daniels and the platoon enter the buildings, along with the resistance, chasing off the Nazis.
Not long after the liberation of Paris, the platoon is fighting in Aachen, Germany. Daniels receives a letter from his wife that she is pregnant. When raiding a hotel, the platoon find German civilians, hiding in the basement. While evacuating them, a little girl named Anna goes missing. Daniels goes back for her, but when he finds her, German soldiers storm the complex. They escape, but when the civilians are being loaded onto a truck, two German soldiers soldiers appear and begin shooting at the truck. In the ensujng firefight, Anna’s older sister is killed.
At the Battle of Hürtgen Forest, the platoon is surrounded by Germans. Pierson orders several of the soldiers to take a German outpost, against Turner’s orders. The attack is a failure, and Turner is fatally shot. Though Daniels tries to get him to safety, Turner orders him to leave him behind as he covers the platoon’s escape. Though he attenpts to hold off the incoming Germans, Turner’s position is quickly overrun and he is killed. Pierson becomes head of the platoon and makes Daniels his second-in-command.
At the height of the Battle of the Bulge, the platoon celebrates Christmas as Pierson still relishes over Turner’s death. One day, when the platoon is surrounded by Germans, Daniels meets an African-American technician, Howard, who helps the platoon contact air support. During the fight, Daniels captures a German soldier carrying information about destroying the last bridge to the Rhine. Pierson orders an attack on a nearby air base. However, the attack is a failure and Daniels and Zussman are soon surrounded by enemy troops. Being loaded into a truck, Daniels is soon saved by his squadmates while the truck drives off carrying Zussman. Despite being ordered to stand down, Daniel attenpts to save Zussman but fails, with Pierson removing him from the platoon for disobeying him.
Twelve hours later, Daniels wakes up in a field hospital, where Colnel Davis tells him that he is a hero, and that he will be going home. Daniels dreams about going back to Texas, but realizes that he can’t leave without Zussman. Meanwhile, in a POW camp in Germany, Zussmam is interrogated by the Germans on his Jewish heritage. When he refuses to cooperate, he is beaten and thrown on a train bound for a concentration camp.
