It’s common knowledge that game betas, and specifically Call of duty’s betas, are little more marketing exercises. Sure the developers are able to stress test the game and their servers prior to launch but the real reason they want people to play early is to promote it and get people hooked on the gameplay.

Call of duty has become extremely proficient at this strategy. Year after year they are able to repackage what is essentially the same game and sell it as an ‘all-new experience’.
So how is this possible and why are betas so effective at convincing people to pre-order and buy the game when it launches? In this video, I’ll discuss the marketing behind the games and how the various addictive components of the gameplay are used to sucker you into buying the same game every year.
