Campaign 2: SEALing Their Fate Part 2 | SEAL Retrieval | 688 (I) Hunter/Killer | Retro
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Captain Chang Plays... 688 (I) Hunter/Killer
In the previous episode, we inserted a SEAL team onto Cuban soil so they can gather intel on how involved is the Cuban navy with the Colombia Drug Cartels.
Campaign Mission 2: SEALing their fate, Part 2
Our job is now to retrieve the SEAL team (see previous mission). We poked our antenna up for a radio update, then went to 560 ft.
It is now 1800, and we need to retrieve them by 2000. Cuban forces have increased patrols in the area, including Foxtrot-class submarines, Osa-class patrol boats, and more. Retrieving the SEAL team is paramount, and you are authorized to defend against any threat.
What wasn't said explicitly was we are now weapons-free, but only against confirmed Cuban naval units.
We noticed at least three military vessels, and a couple of civilian vessels, and some biologics around us. We avoided the surface vessels.
As get got to within 10 nm of the pickup location, we noticed 2 hostile subs in the area. There is no way to sneak by them... They are within a few nm of the pickup location. We engaged them with one torpedo each. One managed to decoy a torpedo way, but our follow-up torpedo got her.
Our second torpedo went after the 2nd sub, but this torpedo just refused to lock on, as it kept going around the sub. TMA team was sure about the range and bearing, but we sent the torpedo back and forth through the area and nothing happened. I was so sure the torpedo will run out of endurance that we actually launched ANOTHER torpedo against that target. But on the 5th or 6th time around we finally got the torpedo to lock on, and that sub was FINALLY sunk.
We also launched a torpedo against a surface vessel to our southwest, as it seem to be a bit too close. But again, the torpedo went past it and we had to turn it 180 to force it into a second pass, and the torpedo caught the vessel.
At this time, we were going at about 15 kt, and we should arrive at the pickup location by 1745, 15 minutes ahead of time.
Now, we can see two hostile vessels... One to northwest, but it's probably inside the harbor, and that's beyond the torpedo's range. There's another contact to our southeast. I turned the torpedo I originally sent northwest to go after the southeastern surface vessel. And that one was sunk.
We arrived at the location, and we turned to look for the contact. It was actually a bit more east than I expect, but it showed up fine on HF sonar. We slowed to a stop at 60 ft, and we waited 90 seconds for them to get onboard.
By this point, we've picked up the SEAL team, and killed 2 subs and 2 surface vessels. However, we also suffered 2 x -100 penalty for being detected by Osa 1 and Osa 2.
With the final vessel hiding inside the Havana harbor, I judged it's not worth going after it. We poked the radio antenna up, and transmitted the mission report, ending the mission.
The mission score is 1300: 700 for the pickup, 200 each for 2 Foxtrots and 200 each for the surface vessels, but -200 for being detected.
NOTE: The Osas supposedly detected me 1 second into the game, which is clearly BS. But the game was infamous for pulling stunts like that just to prevent you from scoring a full score.
We are ready for the next mission...
