The N64 controller gets a bad rap, and while it's not perfect, I think it's misunderstood. In fact, a recent look at the new Retro Fighters Brawler64 Pro got me thinking: there are a bunch of controllers out there that are way worse. Can You Believe I Think These Controllers Are Worse Than The N64's?!
I've put together a list of what I consider the seven worst controllers of all time. I'm taking a stand and saying these are all definitively worse than the N64's three-pronged beast.
The Famicom Mini
I love the classic Famicom controller, but this one is a disaster. It's tiny, hardwired to the console, and the cord is so short you have to sit a foot away from your TV. At least with the NES Classic, we got a properly sized controller.
The Wii U GamePad
As a remote play device, the Wii U GamePad was pretty solid. But as a controller for games like Star Fox Zero, it was an absolute nightmare. The constant need to look down at the screen for motion controls and maps completely ruined the experience. The GamePad was a cool idea in theory, but in practice, it was a mess.
The Sega Saturn 3D Controller
I know, I know—the Saturn had a great standard controller. But its 3D controller? Not so much. It's a bulky precursor to the Sega Dreamcast controller, which is also on this list. I just don't have one to show you. It's awkward and uncomfortable, and I can't stand it.
The Xbox 360 Controller
I know this is a controversial take, but the Xbox 360 controller is my least favorite of all time. As a long-time Nintendo fan, I could never get used to the button layout. I hated the mushy D-pad, the analog sticks felt terrible, and the triggers and bumpers were awful. And let's not even get started on the lack of an integrated battery! The N64 controller is a masterpiece compared to this.
The Original Xbox Controllers (Duke and S)
Everything I said about the 360 controller applies here, but cranked up to 11. The original Xbox controllers were a joke. The Duke was a comically oversized, ergonomic nightmare, and the S controller wasn't much better. Who thought those black and white buttons were a good idea? I'd take the N64 controller over these any day.
