Nintendo Switch 2 Battery Issues? Try These Steps To Fix The Problem!
When I first started playing the Nintendo Switch 2, I didn’t notice an issue with the system in Handheld mode, but then again I didn’t play a ton in handheld mode. That being said, when I flew from Bloomington, IL to Salt Lake City Utah to attend the Utah Retro Game Expo I was floored that on the first leg of my flights, with a layover in Fort Worth, I was down over 40% battery in 90 minutes! I had talked to Kris at @GameDadShow and he had mentioned there was a calibration you could do to fix this issue. When I recently got Madden NFL 26, I noticed that the battery life was once again trash, and I finally decided to go through the calibration process. How does it work? Here are the steps.
Power Off:
Much like the on the Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, you get a separate power option if you hold down the power button for several seconds. You can actually power the system off in this menu, vs simply putting the system to sleep. This is crucial.
Recovery Mode:
Once the system has been powered off, restart it by holding the volume up and down button while pressing and holding the power button. This is very similar to recovery mode on an Android Phone or Tablet. Once the display has powered on, you can let go of the power button, but continue to hold the volume up/down buttons. Once in the recovery mode menu, you do not have to do ANYTHING ELSE! You literally just need to get into this menu and then power the system off again.
Powering On & Menu Settings:
Turn the system back on normally and head into the system settings. From here you’ll want to make sure to set the system to not go into sleep mode. You’ll also want to go into the charging limiter and disable the “Only Charge to 90%”. Once these settings have been changed, then it’s time to drain things down to 0%.
Discharge/Charge Cycles:
To speed up this process, you’ll want to have a rather system-intensive game playing to speed up the drain on your system. I have found Madden NFL 26 to be a resource intensive game, and it drained my system down I less than 2 hours. Once the system powers off, wait until it cools off to ambient room temperature and then charge the system.
When you are ready to charge the system, leave it turned off and connect it to your power supply directly, don’t use the dock. You do not want the system to power on while charging. I actually used the top USB-C port to charge my system. You’ll want to perform this charge/discharge cycle 3 times for maximum effect.
