Eden Switch Emulator Tested: Backup & Play Switch Games On Android
I have been vocally anti-piracy; there have been multiple videos that I have shared my views. One thing, however, that I am in favor of is legal backups of your physical media and software. That's one of the reasons I appreciate the MiG Switch Dumper; it allows you to back up your physical Nintendo Switch Cartridges and store them on your computer. I recently heard of a new emulator that hit the Google Play Store called Eden, and while it is still labeled as an Alpha or Pre-Beta release, it looks awfully promising. I grabbed my Samsung Galaxy S24, my GameSir G8 controller grip, created some fresh backups of Mario Galaxy, Breath of the Wild, and MLB The Show 25, and got to testing as we show you how to Backup & Play Switch Games On Android Devices.
Understanding Backups
When it comes to backing up your games, there are a few things to note. First and foremost, you must maintain ownership of the games you are backing up. If you sell your original, you MUST delete your backup. You're legally not supposed to download games from the internet; you need to make backups of your actual physical games. With the Switch, it's easy to tell this as well as each cartridge has its own sort of digital finger print.
Performance
Thanks, YouTube, for some reason it locked this video into 720P even though I uploaded it at 1080P. Anyways, I will say that this does feel like it is a Beta software, but there's so much good here. Let's focus on areas that could be improved first:
Audio Clipping:
Really noticeable in Mario Odyssey, there was a ton of audio clipping going on here for some reason, and I don't know why. When the audio wasn't clipping or stuttering, it sounded really good, so I am happy there, but there's definite room for improvement.
Exiting out of a game and changing games isn't as easy as it could be. There is a way to map a home button to a physical controller, but it doesn't exit a game. As such, I found myself having to exit the app to switch games.
The frame rate was all over the place on MLB The Show, from 60FPS down to 13FPS. I also noticed there were frame skips as well. This is something that if and when the devs get locked down will be a major improvement.
The Good:
I will say the games looked fantastic on my S24 Ultra, and using the GameSir G8 made it feel totally natural. I will have to get used to the mapping of the buttons being based more on the position vs label as the G8 uses Xbox-style letter placement, but that is pretty easy to overcome.
I was able to install Eden on both my phone and tablet, and while I haven't tried my Tablet yet I am looking forward to it.
Eden is really promising, and when combined with the MiG Switch Dumper, you can have a great time playing your Switch titles on more devices. What do you think of this option? Have you heard of this before? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
