0And here we are. And yes, I abused save states. Stage 9 is just brutally unfair. And yes, I do mean unfair. It's too long with too much damage and demands near perfection from the player, including in areas with random birds. And a boss that can absolutely wreck you because it IS you, with some AI that knows how to punish the player. It can, and will, prevent you from being able to escape properly. It will hit you, and you need the life to be able to beat it, which is deprived from you by the birds in the lead up to it. No, Konami, you failed us here. Even the final boss can simply decide to do damage to you. As Trevor, he *CAN* hit you twice with nothing you can do to prevent it. It is only by his will that you even CAN avoid the damage, and that's difficult to do. Fortunately, as Sypha (not Syfa as this game's translation calls her), you CAN do enough damage fast enough to avoid it. In fact, Sypha does make the final boss a lot easier, thankfully. I still abused save states because without them I would not finish this game. To save time, I had to use them.
The first Castlevania was tough, but fair. This is not. This game's difficulty was overtuned for the US release. The enemies simply do far too much damage. They were never designed for that, and the stages don't reflect their increased damage. And that hurts this game, a lot. Because, after the challenge of the first game, I WANTED to like this one. I wanted it to be another "tough but fair" game. In the end, it was not, and I am sorely disappointed. The game is also filled with some bad translations, such as calling 'Syfa' 'him' early on.
