20-DEC-1984 Just west of Celtic Sea
We have received deep intelligence that there was a secret NATO convoy that's unescorted passing through Celtic Sea soon bound for Portsmouth. The reason this single ship convoy is unescorted is that this ship travels at 30 kt all the way from the US, making it virtually impossible to intercept.
We are going to disprove that.
And indeed, a contact appeared so fast on the horizon, we barely had time to dive before it was upon us.
It was indeed the Algol-class Fast Sealift Ship (FSS), capable of 33 kt in an emergency, and cruises at 30 knots. And it's coming straight for us.
Given its high speed, we started shooting at 24 km. Only to see it do a minor zig zag that threw all the torpedo aim out of whack. I fired a TEST-71M to intercept as well.
The other torpedoes missed, but I got TEST-71M to hit, which caused the ship to slow dramatically all the way to 10, and turned 180 degrees.
We shot again at a range of 12 km, then a third time at a range of 7 km. It finally sank.
While the HQ was not too impressed with us sinking just one ship, we knew what we had accomplished... the nearly impossible.
We headed back to Murmansk for reloads.
23-DEC-1984 Approaching Murmansk, USSR
Our arrival was seen as a good sign, as new of sinking an Algol quickly passed through the base. The Algol had reached almost mythical status among our submarine force, and the fact we sank one proved they are vulnerable.
We resupplied and left the base behind, and headed down the Norwegian coast. Then over Christmas and New Year's we saw the cities of Oslo and Bergen change hands, back under the control of the Rodina.
06-JAN-1985
We have received new orders: We are to intercept a NATO sub attempting to raid our supply line convoys. As it's coming from America, we decided to stop on the Western Approaches again.
To be continued in the next episode!.
