(CCPlays) Starfleet Command | Klingon Campaign 13 That's Not a Mission. That's Suicide! | Let's Play
Welcome to Captain Chang Plays... Starfleet Command, Klingon Campaign!
We've been given a special assignment... It appears that we will NOT get to use our own ships this time. Instead, we've been given a special recon mission... into the WYN radiation zone. Apparently, I should not have insulted Admiral Raha's wife after too much bloodwine.
Anyway, Admiral Raha, to head off the rumor mill that he's sending me on a suicide mission, gave up one of his own ships, which the engineers swore can stand up to the radiation, even though we would have only minimal shields. We would really have no idea what's on the other side anyway...
So we're in the zone, and it's basically a nebula WITH a dust cloud, which hurts the shields, which are already at minimum setting. We detected a couple protostars, gas giants that are on the verge of becoming stars. We are also detecting what appears to be signals. Science said we should deep scan each one within 20 kellicams.
That's when sensors noticed an incoming monster... known as "space shell". Fortunately, a relatively small one. It is basically a biological ship, that didn't like us starships.
I scanned the terrain. The three protostars form a rough triangle, and there are asteroids and dust clouds in the middle. Fighting in there would be suicide. I chose to head into clear space and gave helm the order. We'll go after the shell on our own terms. I ordered speed 16, overloaded disruptors, and waited.
We waited, and waited, and at point-blank range, we fired everything in one alpha strike including missiles. We've hurt it, and it hurt us too, but we can repair the engine damage and loss of a phaser. I ordered the helm to pursue, when sensors called out another space shell in the distance. It will have to wait. In the meanwhile, we are hitting this one. We slowed slightly to recharge the disruptors, but the enemy pulled out of overload range. I ordered the extra charge be dumped, rearm as standard, and fire when ready. Someone fired the missiles too, but those don't survive in the nebula, so it's wasted. No, I did not execute him. That'd be a waste of personnel. He was immediately relieved of his post instead.
After another pass, this shell was critically wounded, but the other shell arrived. It did hit us a bit, but we are committed to see this through, and with another point-blank salvo, we finished off the shell and went after the other one. And through careful maneuvering, we were able to stay on this one by hitting him with disruptors and phasers when he was more than 2 kellicams away, and everything including missiles when he was closer. He didn't have a chance.
We slowly approached each protostar and scanned each one. We can see some sort of beacon, as it's clearly artificial, yet well disguised as noise. We avoided the dust cloud as much as possible. After the third and final one, it's clear it is some sort of navigation aid, leading deeper into the nebula.
The crew begged me to return to normal space, and I agreed. The fact that we survived this long is a testament to our will and skill. No other ship had survived this long in the WYN nebula. This will bring enough glory to sate his continued vendetta against me. It is his ship, after all.
We turned and headed for the sector border, and once we were out of the nebula, we warped for home to a hero's welcome.
And the campaign continues...
