(CCPlays) Cold Waters 1984 NATO Campaign Part 1: Interdict Soviet Raid on Convoy Routes
Cold Waters, in addition to standalone scenarios and mission building, has multiple dynamic campaigns, and dotMod adds even more.
In this dotMod enhanced NATO 1984 Campaign, essentially "Red Storm Rising", Soviet Army has poured across the Fulda Gap the only way Allies can hold on is to stop the Soviet subs and surface fleets intending to destroy the convoys carrying war material and reinforcements from the US. And you, as a USN submarine based in Holy Loch, UK, will be a key part of this effort.
My typical loadout for 688 in 1984 is no Harpoon, no TASM, no TLAM, just 4-5 MOSS decoys and the rest, Mk 48 Mod 4 ADCAP torpedoes. I usually load 3 torpedoes and 1 decoy in the tubes "just in case".
NOTE: The photo in the thumbnail and the badge was of the real USS Portsmouth SSN 707, which has been decommissioned for many many years by now. Consider this a tribute to her service, and to all those who served aboard her.
------
Mission 1: Patrol the area between Iceland and UK and interdict any Soviet subs that try to pass through.
NOTE: There can be SEVERAL encounters as we run into groups that were NOT our objective. Which is normal.
19-NOV-84 Sank 1 November, 1 Victor I
19-NOV-84 Sank 1 November, 1 Victor II
19-NOV-84 Sank 1 Charlie II
Mission 2: Defend Reykjavik / Keflavik, Iceland from Soviet amphibious landing fleet intending to disable the GIUK SOSUS line
22-NOV-84 We moved to west side of Iceland, which was not far from our previous patrol area. A fleet was spotted in the Denmark Strait, and we moved to setup our ambush.
22-NOV-84 We have IDed the landing force as 1 x Udaloy, 1 x Krivak I, 3 x Ropucha, 1 x Svedlov, 1 x Andizhan, 1 x Sovremenny. Svedlov is in the center, Krivak leading, with Udaloy and Sovremenny on the flanks. After a bit of a chase, I was able to sink all but the Svedlov, which attempted to retreat to the northwest, but I was able to hunt him down eventually, making a clean sweep.
Mission 3: Stop hostile cruise missile sub from transiting through the Denmark Strait. It may have escorts.
24-NOV-84 We submerged when sonar reported contact, and after submerging, we eventually IDed Echo II and Charlie I, our mission objective. Expended 2 torpedoes and sank both.
Was ordered to return to Holy Loch for replenishment, but no rest, as the war is still on... We have expended most of our torpedoes by now. However, we have fulfilled all mission objectives so far, and thus, this is a successful patrol. But the war is far from over...
Mission 4: Stop the Soviet landing force from conducting an amphibious attack on Trondheim, Norway.
We transited to the coast of Norway, and we set up north of Trondheim and await the Soviet task force.
And the war continues...
