Welcome to another Creative Deck Profile, this time focused on the Centurion archetype. This new theme offers by far the most competitive potential of the new DVBS archetypes, so let's talk about why. The theme only has 3 in-archetype monsters: the first, and most important, is Centurion Primera. Whenever Primera is summoned, it tutors another Centurion card, simple as that. The second monster is Centurion Trudea, which can place itself and another Centurion from your deck face-up in your S/T Zone as Continuous Traps. And lastly, Centurion Emet VI can Special Summon itself from the hand or GY by placing a face-up Centurion Monster into the S/T Zone as a Continuous Trap. Most importantly, each of these three monsters can Special Summon themselves from the S/T Zone during either player's Main Phase. Given that fun information, and the fact that their Field Spell, Stand-Up Centurion!, performs a similar role by letting you place a Centurion monster from your deck into the S/T Zone, let's talk about how this theme wins: Synchro Summons. You see, their Field Spell also has an effect to immediately Synchro Summon using at least 1 Centurion you control, whenever any monster is Special Summoned. While you may choose to Synchro Summon Centurion Legatia, their in-theme Level 12 Synchro Monster, you often can opt into Synchro Summoning The Crimson Dragon instead, letting you 'Synchro Summon' Hot Red Dragon Archfiend King Calamity during the opponent's Main Phase, shutting down their cards and effects on the field for the rest of the turn. And this combo is ultra consistent, as you just need one of 13 cards to pull off a Calamity effect on your opponent's first turn.
Now that's a great description of the overall gameplan of the theme, but that doesn't get into the big question of this profile: Should you run this theme with the Bystial archetype, or not. If you've lived under a rock the past few years, the Bystial archetype consists of Dragon monsters that can Special Summon themselves from the hand by banishing a LIGHT or DARK monster in either GY. This gives you quite a bit of control over the duel, especially if your opponent is running a LIGHT or DARK-heavy deck. In the first build of this video, I'm using the Bystial monsters, and as you will see, this gives the Centurion additional support in the form of disruption, but they also give them more Synchro options by expanding the pool of available Synchro Monsters to those that are Level 10. Additionally, The Bystial Aluber serves as another Level 4 Tuner to augment Primera for other combo plays. The second build of this video uses no Bystial monsters; in their place, I've substituted a bunch of cards that would otherwise be typically found in a sideboard. Options like Lightning Storm and Harpie's Feather Duster let you go second through an established board, and cards like Dimensional Barrier or Ice Dragon's Prison can just end an opponent's combo. I'm also highlighting a few tech cards for the Centurion archetype, such as Apophis the Swamp Diety to negate face-up cards, Red Reign to mass banish monsters on the field, and Burning Soul as a back-up Synchro option during the opponent's turn that also happens to recover any card from your GY.
The choice is yours: Bystial or No Bystial. Either way, hope you enjoy seeing the new archetype in action!
