So....let's just say it right away. Charon's Staircase is a mod. I mean, it has to be, right? Undefined textures, weird body movement, simplistic environmental design. It 100% feels like a mod that turned into a separate release.

Also, I guessed the retail of the game was $20, although I still think that's too high for a game that MIGHT take you an hour, if you know what you're doing.

These games are almost depressing in a way; once you release that the world doesn't offer any true danger or fear, it takes away all the anxiety. You laugh at the attempt to scare, because it's all cheap shock value without the payoff. Sure, there are a couple places where you can die or lose or fail (however you want to phrase it), but they're all at the end, exceedingly brief, and not very exciting.

The game is all about exploration and lore. In other words: reading. I love reading. I'm a writer by nature. I read constantly. But if you want to provide ALL of your game backstory through notes and texts, I'm out. I'm not reading it. I came to this game to interact, not read a cheaply written novella amidst random puzzles and hallway wanderings.

But I digress.

Charon's Staircase is...okay. It's not awful, but it's certainly not good. And it's not scary. And the ending is NOT clever, no matter what they try and tell you.
