Still Wakes the Deep - The Queue
0I've never played any of the Amnesia games, nor have I played Dear Esther or similar walking simulator games (and yes, I'm aware that developer The Chinese Room only developed one of the Amnesia games, not the entire series).
Nevertheless, I was interested in Still Wakes the Deep. A horror-based walking simulator adventure-stealth game in an unused environment, boasting a dangerous Cthulu-esque mystery. Count me in.
A lot of the monster elements remind me of a blend between "War of the Worlds" and "The Thing," although it's nice that the main character isn't hellbent on solving the mystery - he's only concerned with surviving. I'm also glad that other characters exist within the narrative, rather than everyone dying off in the early moments to leave our hero as the sole survivor. Gives a little more heft to the survival element, as well as more to interact with.
I'm genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed playing Still Wakes the Deep; these kinds of games typically only hold my attention for 30 minutes or so, then I'm on to something else. But I greatly enjoyed running around the oil rig, looking for survivors, and experiencing some deep sea monster mayhem.
And swearing like a Scottish sailor. Which is a lot. Sorry, kids.
