Hundreds of soldiers and their families stationed in Germany have returned to their homes, following an operation to clean up a chemical incident.

They had been forced to spend the night in military gyms and messes after the accident at a nearby factory.

The incident took place at the Kraft foods factory close to Fallingbostel Station. It happened when employees accidentally poured acid into a tank containing sodium hydroxide solution, causing a chemical reaction.

Local schools were closed for the day and the main autobahn from Hamburg to Hannover was also shut.

German authorities issued a disaster alert and also evacuated nearby homes.

There are no reports of any injuries in either community.
