Chernobylite - Knee-Deep In Fear
Not great, not terrible. These were the words I had said after playing nearly 20 hours of this fps survival game across a few days, FPS games are always my go to even if it feels like the fps genre has changed for the worse.. and the better in ways.
Chernobylite was originally released in 2021 on Pc and this ps5 upgrade was launched in 2022, our story follows a member of the the engineers who survived the catastrophe of the Chernobyl incident in 1986. It's been 30 years since the accident, and now haunted by constant voices and seeing his wife from a picture, Igor who we control has returned to the exclusion zone to find answers, and also learn about the strange material now appearing in the exclusion zone.
Chernobylite is a different breed of FPS game combining survival horror with a adventure sense to it, We do a prologue where we have flashbacks to that horrible day in 1986 and visions of our wife but also.. something dark, In the 30 years since the nuclear accident a new material named "Chernobylite" has began to appear not just in the ruined reactor #4 but also around the nearby woods and such.
Our gameplay follows Igor heading a force to find a way back to the ruined reactor to find his wife, He runs a "command post" from a nearby military stockpile. This leads to one issue I have with this FPS game and thats the rations/morale system, You'll have to been very very decisive on what missions you and your followers will do as you have to keep well rested, well fed and high morale if you want to reach the ending(s), NAR mercenaries are a constant threat and as I've found post-video, its better to take one out and sneak into the shadows/grass then battle them several at a time while on missions.
Gunplay is nothing special, its like a cross between the *"realistic"* Call of Duty movement and reloading and gunplay of another FPS classic I played which was S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. Constant struggle with stealth is something I generally do not appreciate in a FPS as its so awkward to switch between that and high adrenaline shooting, Controls are fine though the camera is awfully quick moving and I had to tune that down. It's impressive for the storyline which can have several endings, though its gunplay isn't anything to write hom about, and Plat hunters will be pleased to know you can easily get the Plat without much effort since its around the story itself.
