Doom Map Talk #14:Deimos Anomaly, Containtment Area, Refinery
Continuing on, Episode 2 is where Doom will begin to reveal its hellish side more closely. Now that we've brought down the "Bruiser Brothers", We enter "Deimos Anomaly" which is another techbase, this time on the surface of Deimos which had vanished from the sky according to the Doom Collector Edition's Adobe PDF manual, This techbase is different in the hellish scenery taking over, blood that hurts us and lowering bridges all contribute to the first taste of what Doom has in terms of real hell.
"I sawed the demons" sets the tone for this map being inspired heavily by AC/DC's Big Gun and more deep diving into Doom's hard rock and gore that never gets old. Ultra-Violence in Episode 2 will put you through the rinser in more ways than one with shotgun guys, imps, and zombiemen being in higher numbers along with the new "Cacodemon", These red floating monsters can bite you or spit thunder-like energy at you, Pinkies become more common too along with the spectres.
"Containment Area" is one of my personal favorite levels, Its a massive warehouse with boxes stacked around which according to Doomwiki was inspired by Raiders of the Lost Arc and would appear in the game Star Wars Jedi Knight by LucasArts. Unique to Containment Area is the fact there are no zombiemen nor shotgun guys so you'll have to walk over pre-placed ammo to get through the map and also make friends with the Berserk Pack.
The "Berserk Pack" is a black medikit which turns the screen red and switches us to our brass knuckle fist, what should be noted is this pack increased the punch by 10 times and even after our screen becomes normal again we still have the increased punch til we change levels and I'll tell you now, this thing will save your life but can also make things very difficult, it depends on the level you play on and your dance you do while punching avoiding enemy attack has to be up to sync.
Containment Area's mood is further added to by one of my personal favorites tracks composed by Bobby Prince, "The Demons From Adrian's Pen" which gives us the mood of entering a long forgotten warehouse overrun with hellish enemies, I didn't go for the yellow key doors since I wasn't continuous playing and suicided for each map to start over with a pistol.
"Refinery" is...annoying in a way but also a good map, It doesn't really look like a Refinery but its crawling with many enemies and our first Baron of Hell since the boss battle in E1M8. The music usage seems lazy as its just the intermission from doom song that usually plays for maybe.. 5 seconds if you tap spacebar twice.
Styling of the map seems very unusual but the dark maze along the lost souls and the imps towards the end was a spooky part even as kid which seemed quite evil. The next episode will go over the 3 maps that are to many, the scariest/spookiest maps of the original Doom, but these 3 maps along show you that hell's come to play for keeps.
