My first game against [TI-99/4A] Video Chess in intermediate play level and normal play style, which is its strongest settings, via Classic99 emulator.
Video Chess available options:
- Level of Play: Beginner, Novice, or Intermediate
- Style of Play: Normal, Aggressive, or Defensive ("Normal" is likely the strongest, based on my knowledge of chess engines which tells me it is likely the most balanced which is typically the strongest.)
I defeated Video Chess easily based on my previous experience with the program. I played it previously on beginner mode (twice) and novice mode (once). Intermediate, its setting this game, is its strongest mode. It takes way longer to think. Although I never played it at this level my brother, Jason Doucette, beat it easily and saw it still making mistakes like the lower modes. Sometimes when a chess program is so weak, the difficult mode does not matter.
I played aggressively, sacrificed a bishop for a pawn to threaten the king. I quickly checkmated knowing Video Chess would have to see five moves ahead to avoid it (I had incorrectly calculated this as six moves while playing) and avoid gobbling up a free pawn I offered it, and it was unlikely to see this far ahead.
Consider the five moves:
12. Ng5 threatens mate.
12...Bf5 is the only move that prevents mate, but to see it, Video Chess would have to see the next four moves, which to see that it is mate is really the next five moves (where the fifth move is impossible to make):
12...Nxd5 13. Qxh7+ Kf8 14. Qxf7# 1-0
