After the X-Men was rebooted in 1975, Chris Claremont soon became the head writer, and boy did he do some magical things to transform the series into something special. His emphasis on interpersonal relationships and well balanced characters gave the comic much needed depth and dramatic gravity. Stock villains, like Magneto, became compelling anti-heroes. The philosophical implications of being a “mutant” were further spelled out, and explored. And there was even an oddly progressive emphasis on internationalism and lots of exposure of women….lot and lots of exposure if you know what I mean.
