CiB Game Boy Theater - Tetris 2 and Double Dragon (Episode 93)
The Original Game Boy is one of the biggest 'game changers' in the history of video games, and essentially ushered in the popularity of handheld games. There are many games that will be classic forever. There are, however, a much, much higher number of simply awful, forgettable, or downright weird games. CiB Game Boy Theater shows you some of the games you might not (and shouldn't be...) familiar with.
Tetris 2 was released on September 21, 1993 for the Game Boy, NES, and SNES. The Game Boy version was developed by Nintendo R&D 1 (who developed many amazing games, including Metroid Fusion, Zero Mission, and all the Wario Land games) and published by Nintendo themselves.
So, Tetris 2 is kind of like a mixture of Tetris and Dr. Mario, -not- to be confused with Tetris & Dr. Mario, the SNES cartridge that released in 1994 ---- yeah. Anyway, Tetris 2 is the game that nobody asked for, and despite them giving a solid effort, very few remember this game particularly fondly. Tetris 2 is the 3rd Tetris game we have seen on Game Boy Theater, joining Tetris Blast (Episode 33) and Tetris Plus (Episode 59) --- and there will be more!
Double Dragon is a 1987 arcade game that was ported to the --- well, everything. It was ported to the NES and Game Boy in 1988, and was developed by Technos Japan (they are mostly known for Double Dragon) and published by Taito.
Hey - it's Double Dragon! It's Double Dragon --- on the go! We previously played Double Dragon 3 on Episode 51, and that game was awful. Luckily the original Double Dragon is about as Double Dragon-y as you can possibly expect. Sincerely though, this is a solid port, and although Double Dragon has always been a pretty standard beat 'em up, this does well on the Game Boy. The 'no continues' trope is inexcusable though. Thanks for watching!
