CiB Let's Try - Skullmonkeys
Playstation 1 is truly the 'Wild West' of video game systems. In the early days of 3D, it seemed like every developer tried to throw their hat into the massively popular PS1 ring and produced some of the most random, odd games of all-time. Recently, we sat down with a stack of PS1 games we never heard of, and the results are... unsurprising.
I knew that Skullmonkeys had a decent cult following for awhile, but we never got around to playing it until now. On the good side of things, Skullmonkeys has absolutely beautiful Claymation animation, is very funny, and has a great soundtrack.
On the negative, it's a 2D platformer. I don't want to say that as a true negative, but the gameplay of Skullmonkeys seems secondary to the story, animation, and soundtrack --- which is very weird to say about a platformer on the PS1. Nowadays, we're used to style over substance, but not so much during that era.
Overall, Skullmonkeys does seem worthy of a full playthrough, even just to see all the cutscenes. It's a shame that the game itself is just kind of... there. Obviously, I hope I'm wrong, and they incorporate a ton of fun features as the game progresses, but I have a feeling the gameplay just kinda... is. Still, worth picking up for sure!
