Developed by Genesis Software and published by Codemasters in 1991.

CJ in the USA is the sequel to the fun budget platform game, CJ's Elephant Antics, also released in 1991.

The first game was a really good platformer, but I'm sad to say that the same cannot be said about the sequel.

CJ is on a mission to rescue his buddies who have been strewn across the USA. This amounts to combing several tortuous levels in search of tiny elephants dressed in blue shirts before finding your way to the exit whereupon you have to beat a series of (uninspired) boss characters.

Everything about this game seems to convey that the developer's hearts weren't really in it when making the game. The level variety is poor and the music is bizarrely melancholy and totally unsuited to an action-platform game.

The only thing that raised an eyebrow about this game was one of the enemy sprites; a white-robed figure in hood that looks remarkably like a member of the Ku Klux Clan.

Fortunately, CJ is able to see of any number of hostile white supremacists using a combination of peanuts fired from his trunk, as well as hurling bombs in their general direction. Enemies can drop cakes, burgers or hot-dogs for extra points. Other enemies may drop extra bombs, or a drug capsule that grants temporary invincibility.

Strangely, perhaps the best thing about the game is the ending where you get to see CJ and his mini-jumbo buddies pile into a space shuttle and blast off into space.
This is, of course, if you ever make it to the end. The game is rammed full of spikes and traps that are very difficult to avoid, as well as many times where you're required to make blind leaps of faith that usually result in an impaling on said spikes.

So, there you have it; a pretty sorry effort when compared to the original. It's not a terrible game, but there's nothing here that you can really enjoy. If the spikes don't make you want to slit your wrists then the music certain will.

A game best played with a bottle of whiskey and some pills.
