Cloudlands 2 is a perfect example of to not always judge anything on first appearances. My first play through of this golfing sim was a little frustrating at times, i would regularly accidently hit the ball whilst setting myself up for a shot and i nearly always missed judged the weight of shots, ending up with my score looking more like a cricket scored card than a golf one.

But then something happened, i started to play the game much more as if it was a simulation than an arcade game, it is the simplistic visuals that lull you into thinking it is just an arcade golf game. Yes there are unrealistic crazy golf holes, but the main holes are set out as if from a proper course having water and bunker hazards as well as slopes and out of bounds. To be able to start posting more respectable scorecards you'll need to play each one a number of times to learn the best routes for avoiding the hazards and strength of shots, very much like real life golf.

As i mentioned above, the visuals are very much cut from the same cloth as those from an early Mario Golf game, they are colourful and once you get past this and concentrate more on your golf swing and aiming you will begin to love the game more.

The tracking of your club is very precise, in fact a little too precise, if you are not careful you will find yourself disturbing the ball whilst you are getting ready, the best method i found was to teleport yourself close to the balls lie and then physically position yourself in reality ready to swing. Being an ex golfer i am already noticing similarities between my real life golf game and virtual one, my driving and mid length approach play are solid, the longer iron shots and putting poor.

There is a nice campaign mode to play through which is a number of ready made 18 hole courses made up of natural and crazy golf holes, including a boss battle at the end..... i know, a boss battle in golf!. You are also able to play multiplayer with friends and finally get creative by making your own course in the level designer.

All in all this is a brilliant golfing game that at first frustrates, forget the visuals, i kept playing and have grown to love the challenge of trying to lower my score and challenge the online leaderboards.
