*Mission Guide: Extract Kosygin - First Variation (A)*
Finally, a mission with a zen feeling to it! This time, our objective is to rescue one of Stalin's key atomic strategists, Major Vladimir Kosygin. We start on a beautiful green island, and we are all alone! The mission is slow-paced and careful, with minimal opposition from the enemy (except for those relentless airplanes). Build enough air defenses (AA guns and rocket launchers) to keep the aircraft at bay. Destroyers also help to damage or take down incoming aircraft.
_Let's get into the details!_
*Strategy Guide:*
*Castaway:*
_We start the mission with two riflemen and an MCV. Quickly deploy your MCV and start building your base while using the riflemen to explore the island. We are alone! Surprise! No Soviets, not even a volleyball named Wilson (love that movie)! Set up a basic economy and unit production._
*Nowhere to Be Seen:*
_The strange thing about this level is that the AI is surprisingly dormant (as long as you don't set foot on the island with the main Soviet base on it ). This means that if you play your cards right, you won't have any direct Soviet assaults on your base. However, to be sure, I always block the south beach with mines (although this is more of a psychological reassurance rather than actual protection!). Build a naval yard and start constructing destroyers._
*Ore Thieves:*
_Use the destroyers to eliminate enemy ore trucks roaming the ore fields south of the second island (with the main Soviet base on it). This will disrupt the enemy's economy to some extent. Build sufficient air defenses on your island; once the AI is activated, you will get visits from Yak and Mig attack aircraft. Use rocket soldiers and AA guns to protect your base. Don't forget to construct pillboxes to take care of any pilots bailing out of shot-down aircraft. Positioning destroyers at key locations is also useful to eliminate aircraft before they reach your base._
*Red October:*
_Lead your battlegroup of destroyers for an assault on the Soviet naval base. Move along the east side of the island to a heavily defended bay area. The bay entrance is populated with Soviet submarines. Take shelter with your destroyers behind some rocks and use the alternate fire mode (ctrl + click) to damage the submarines with missiles instead of depth charges, preventing your destroyers from getting too close._
*Spy Games:*
_With the bay entrance cleared, it's time to use a spy to explore the area. This will help get a view of the bay area and parts of the surrounding terrain. Beware of the dogs; they will guard the base entrance and start following your spy if you get too close. It's important to reveal the Tesla coil guarding the bay (as you can target it from a distance with your destroyers, preventing a lot of misery). Keep your destroyers in good health by rotating them and repairing them using your naval yards._
*Bombardiers to your stations:*
_Move your destroyers further into the bay and destroy the submarine pen, halting the production of those nasty buggers. Beware of the V2 rocket launchers, as they will target your destroyers. Also, destroy any transport ships that will transport units to your base if they get through. With your destroyers close to the Soviet base, you can start bombing essential structures (ore refinery, barracks, etc.)._
*Dog Day Afternoon:*
_Start eliminating the attack dogs to make a path for Kosygin to escape the base. This is essential, as dogs will be sent out to get Kosygin after he leaves the command center. Have a transport ship ready to collect Kosygin and transport him to the base._
*Slow and Steady Wins the Race:*
_Although you can finish the mission by transporting Kosygin to your base, I always feel the mission isn't complete. So, I decided to capture the enemy base and slowly destroy it from the inside. When Kosygin is released, you will get two battle cruisers as reinforcement, which is the most (imbalanced) fun unit of the whole game! When you are finished, Kosygin debark from the transport ship on the southern island, and the mission will be accomplished. Good luck, commander!_
