Crazy Cars III, a conversion of the Amiga original by The Trisomic Boys (TRB) and published by Titus in 1992.

“Burn up the highways of the USA at the wheel of your Lamborghini Diablo in the Crazy world of illegal Saturday Night Races. Put your driving skills to the test across 60 different routes. Weave through the traffic, beat off the competition, collide with your opponents and drive them off the road. Avoid roadworks and most of all, watch out for those cops! Put your money where your mouth is! Bet on the winners and earn yourself a fortune to spend on entering more races and customizing your car. Many driving environments: City, dessert, mountain roads, falling snow, pouring rain, nighttime driving and more.”

This is an interesting game. I had it on the Amiga but didnt know it was on the C64. I’d have likely bought it being a fan of driving games had I known about it back then. (Before moving onto the Amiga that is). It’s well presented and much like the Amiga version but not without its issues. The tape version is being played here and it is missing a lot of content contained in the disk version. I might have been annoyed back in the day if I had home to play this version having already read reviews about the disk version. This version is often dubbed ‘The Arcade game’ as it plays in a very linear fashion.

Unlike the disk version where you have an actual challenge to work to, this game just puts you through 12 races with the only requirement being to win. There is no choice of identity at the start. You don't really have to watch out for cops, well apart from avoiding being smashed to bits by them. You get given a fresh set of boosts at the start of each race so it doesn't matter about saving them. Like the disk version it has a major issue that you don't get to know your race placement. Only that you start in 4th place. Two cars are obvious, but the third could be anywhere. I can only suggest using all boost to ensure you are at the front. Car upgrades are given to you as you progress through the races. Again, I don’t know if we are seeing the night vision goggles in action.

It is a very bare bones version of the game but it’s ok if you just want a turbo outrun type of experience. Your reward for finishing is a pretty lackluster text message. The Easyflash release by Excess is being played here with really fast load times. The disk version would have benefited a lot more though from the conversion.
