Dalek Attack, developed and Published by Alternative software in 1992 (Admiral Software being the full price label).
“It’s the year 2254 and Earth has been invaded by the most ruthless and vicious race in the universe The Daleks. Under instruction from their leader, the evil Davros, they have captured four major cities, London, Paris, new York and Tokyo. Each city has been sealed off using a dome force field, and the daleks have constructed huge ozone destroying machines, which have been carefully located in each of the cities. To ensure success the Darleks have not come alone. They have brought with them henchman the Ogrons (war loving ape like creatures, who obey their every command), also vile mutants who have developed a taste for the earthlings, Dinosaurs who have been clones and programmed to attack humans, and of course a range of their huge Robot Super Guardians armed with the very latest weaponry. The Timelords have summoned the ‘Doctor’ to help the humans combat this terror and save the Universe from the evil of the Darleks.”
The game was released on most of the 8 and 16 bit home computers of the time. The same manual and box were used for all even though the 8 and 16 bit versions are quite different. Luckily the box reminds us that “Some features may be omitted from certain 8 bit versions”
Right from the start, we can see the production value that went into the C64 version with the Intro music running out long before the intro text has finished being displayed. It sounds like the musician just gave up halfway through making it!
The game opens up with you flying through a sewer (every games gotta have a sewer level right?) rescuing some humans and then killing a dinosaur boss. It plays a little like a shoot em up, maybe left over from the Suburban Commando game. Other versions, the sewer is played on foot.
Once we get to London, the game becomes an exploration platformer requiring you to find windows and doors to other rooms finding trapped humans. There are usually some weapons and grenade powerups as well. Any Daleks encountered can't be damaged until you have your weapon fully powered. In general, it is probably best to avoid the daleks and just get on with exploring. At the end of each level you get a boss fight with a machine requiring a good number of hits. Eventually we get to the end of the game and a fight with Davros which reveals a really basic ending once defeated.
It’s an ok game if you like exploration platformers but the floaty controls may cause frustration. I quite like that each level has its own music. It does support two player mode with the second player controlling the companion and allows co-op play. -
