Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, original Amiga game developed by Magnetic Fields I’m not sure if they did the C64 conversion. Published by Gremlin Software in 1990.

“Feel the thrill of accelerating from 0 to 60 in 4.7 seconds as you race head to head over hills, through valleys bends and around vicious bends and gripping the wheel of your Lotus Esprit Turbo. Game features include: 3D split screens 1 or 2 player action. 32 courses across 3 different levels. 20 competing cars. Multi-hazard Turbo racing. Refuelling and pitstop decision tactics.”

A great and well remembered game on the Amiga. Even though it was technically quite a simple game, conversions to the 8 bit machines didn't really work out. I mean they tried and the presentation is all there but the limited viewport is much more apparent and makes the game more difficult than it should be. That said, the C64 version is very forgiving allowing you to go right into the sides and maintain full speed although it’s collision detection with cars and hazards is less so. An annoying issue that is in every version is the fact that the ai cars can drive through the hazards unhindered. If you hit one, you are going to lose places.as the cars behind come rushing through you. Graphically the racing takes a big hit over the original. No markings on the road, very few road signs and hazards kind of just appear out of nowhere. The tracks are pretty short however making them fairly easy to memorise where they are. Fuel is used up pretty quickly so it pays to always keep an eye on the fuel meter.

The Aim of the game is fairly simple. To win the championship, you need the most points on the championship table. To qualify, you need to reach at least the top ten in each race. Always aim to be 1st as the more points you have early on means you can afford to lose a few places in the later harder races.

At the start you can choose one of three tunes to play during the race. You are stuck with this decision the entire game so I chose sound effects. Tine 1 plays on the Intro/Title screen. Once the game is completed I show the two remaining tunes. Tune 2 sounds broken to me though.

00:00:00 Intro (Tune 1)
00:01:30 Game starts Here (Sound Effects)
01:01:15 Tune 2
01:02:41 Tune 3

(Note: There was a video glitch around 13 mins which lasted 14 seconds which i have cut out - this results in the race appearing to suddenly end.) -
