Counter-Strike: Global Offensive w/ 3D spatial sound 🎧 (Steam Audio HRTF)
USE HEADPHONES ONLY with any virtual surround like Windows Sonic turned off. Best HRTF effects at 1:22, 3:54, 8:13, 10:02, 14:20, 16:50, 19:55, 20:36, and 25:06.
To cap off this channel's second season, here is the game that introduced millions of millenials to HRTF. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive needs no introduction, really. It's been a rocky 7 years, with constant balance changes, Russian hackers galore, and millions of dollars earned through giving minors gambling addictions. For long-time fans, the switch to a F2P model was the final nail in the coffin. As we enter the dawn of a new decade, however, CSGO still stands supreme in one area that its fiercest competitors like Overwatch, PUBG, and Rainbow Six: Siege can't seem to grasp.
3D positional audio.
Steam Audio is without a doubt the best mainstream 3D audio processing solution today. Every single aspect of the engine has been refined to perfection. Take for example the 20:36 timestamp. A T climbs up Ladder and breaks the window into Front Office. A CT counters him soon after with a P90. Only three distant sounds are heard to my rear, but they were all that was needed for me to process what had just happened. It's a level of subtlety you would not hear in Call of Duty MW2019 or Overwatch with their half-assed Dolby Atmos implementations. It's also something you wouldn't hear in CS1.6 or CSS due to their quick, unrealistic sound rolloff.
So how does Steam Audio stack up to MetaAudio? Well, in a shocking turn of events, MetaAudio reigns supreme in positional audio, occlusion effects, and even CPU usage. The rolloff is flawed in the CSCZ video, but that's due to GoldSrc's shoddy programming, not LAGonauta. It's a real shame, as Steam Audio is polished enough to include Air Absorption yet it still can't compare to an open-source software made for free by a handful of people. I can only hope that someone from Valve sees these CS HRTF videos someday and takes some notes from my footage.
