"Cowboy Kid", released in 1991 for the NES (also known as Western Kids in Japan), is an intriguing addition to the Wild West game lineup on the console. Developed by Pixel, it adopts a curious approach by incorporating elements from both the Konami's Lone Ranger and Mystical Ninja series, particularly the latter's protagonist, Goemon.

Players assume the role of Cowboy Kid, also known as Sam, whose mission is to avenge his father's death at the hands of the ruthless Scorpion Gang. Determined to follow in his father's footsteps, Sam becomes the new sheriff in town with the help of his Native American friend, Little Chief, who acts as a secondary character in two-player mode.

The gameplay unfolds in stages set in town environments, resembling a Lone Ranger homage, where Sam faces off against stereotypical Western enemies. To tackle the six Scorpion Gang sub-bosses, players are offered the freedom to choose the order in which they confront them.

Despite closely mimicking the design and mechanics of Ganbare Goemon games, Cowboy Kid falls short in some areas. The hit detection and level design leave much to be desired, hindering the overall experience. However, it boasts a commendable soundtrack by composer Masaharu Iwata.

While Cowboy Kid lacks the same charm and consistency as its inspirations, it remains a playable and average-quality NES release. Fans of Mystical Ninja may still find it amusing to witness an alternate universe version of Goemon in a Wild West setting. Though not the best in the genre, it offers a unique twist for players seeking a simpler and less challenging Wild West adventure.
