Crash Bandicoot 2 - 100% speedrun in 1:29:39.32 (single-segment) by MrBean35000vr (commentated)
This record has been obsoleted! If you want to see a faster run, also by me, go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoXQF-mg96E
I said I'd upload when I got less than 90 minutes... and HELL YEAH! Single segment Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back in 89:39 :P
For several months, I've been working on a single-segment speedrun for Crash 2 to complete the game to 100% in the fastest time possible. Here is my best run to date, 89:39 with 7 accidental deaths. Yes, that's a lot of deaths, but only few of them wasted a lot of time. I do wish to improve the speedrun with less deaths overall, and think I can do it... but it did take me a while to get things this low.
Anyways, this video is commentated by both me and Chadderz to make things a little more interesting. Chadderz is also responsible for the clock and percentage tracker, which look pretty good in my humble opinion, so I thank him for adding them :P
So, more about this run...
I do not use the unbreakable box glitch, as it is too gamebreaking and would be boring as hell to watch. I do however, make use of the glitch high jump for many things, and the extra boxes glitch in two levels where I can make it activate. I also do the seemingly strange thing of unlocking two secret levels I don't need to unlock... but they actually add 1% each for unlocking them, so the game won't call 100% unless you get them (but it does let you have best end without them. But since this is classed as a 100% speedrun, I want the game to agree with me :P).
Movement is mainly slide-spin. To get the fastest slide spin, you must do as follows: Specify a direction with d-pad or analog, start a slide. Release d-pad or analog before slide ends and do a spin. Crash's spin will then be a lot faster than usual until it ends, then you make another slide and continue. This is roughly 1.8x as fast as normal running.
In terms of the route I use, it's all to do with masks. I do NOT want to go invincible for any reason as it lowers my top speed significantly. So I deliberately take a route going to levels that automatically remove masks, or go to levels where I plan to deathwarp, wherever it is needed to ensure it doesn't occur.
The timing used is according to SDA's rules: Timing starts when I gain proper control of Crash; I class that as the first frame where I can make him move anywhere, so I start the time on the one frame where Crash has movement before Cortex tries to talk to him. Ending as soon as I killed Cortex, when the game will automatically take itself to 100% from there. Beyond the time limit, I do pause to show the 100% and then take the best end. But technically the game is already complete at that point so there is no need to include it in the time.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy. It took lots of hard work and I'm quite pleased with the result. That said, you may see improvement from me yet! :P
Also... YES, more Mario Kart Wii is on the way. Worry not :P
