Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back - N Sane Trilogy version - Part 2
On the success of it's predecessor, Crash 2 was immediately given a budget of $2,000,000 - and if we were playing the original you would see immediately where the money went. For starters, the game engine allowed animations to move 10 times faster and 3 times the polygon count loaded at once. Innovations like adaptive difficulty based on how the player gets on (definitely seen in my Crash 1 playthrough 😂 ), precision controls and more moves to navigate levels are a big part of why series enthusiasts consider this the best outing.
The story takes place immediately after the first game, with Cortex hatching a plan to gather crystals in order to enslave every being on the planet with a giant ray. Crash, none the wiser, begins to collect these crystals through 25 brilliantly designed and challenging levels split across 5 floors - each with it's own gimmick boss such as Ripper Roo, N Gin or Tiny Tiger. I must say though, that each boss presented a fraction of the challenge that the first game offered, which is a little underwhelming after some of the downright unfair trial and error nature of the later levels. I also felt that the game was a little short compared to the first. These are minor criticisms, as it was a solid and fun romp even despite more questionable hit box deaths.
