CREATE INVISIBLE STAIRS with the Level 5 Scroll Glitch (Castlevania, NES) - A Wild Glitch Appears!
There are numerous locations in the original Castlevania for NES where you can exploit a technique called The Scroll Glitch to alter the way the game loads the environment. In Stage 13 of Level 5, speedrunners manipulate Simon's position to exploit this glitch, and confuse the game into change the layout of the level and complete certain sections faster.
This trick requires some precise positioning and movement, and took me plenty of practice before I could execute it correctly.
The first thing you'll want to do is line up Simon Belmont in the correct pixel. To start off, move to the right, then face left so that his foot is just one pixel to the right of the third dot of that dungeon gate thing in the background. Some people might call it a rivet?
Now at the same time JUMP and hold DOWN and RIGHT so that Simon immediately crouches and faces to the right when he lands. From this position, you will need to move EXACTLY TWO PIXELS to the left, which many speedrunners achieve by tapping LEFT then IMMEDIATELY PRESSING B to whip.
Now move to the right so that Simon's back foot lines up with the right edge of the very next round stone thingy in the background. Then once again move EXACTLY TWO PIXELS TO THE LEFT.
Lastly, continue right until Simon's face is perfectly lined up with the left side of the very next stone tile on the wall. Then once again, move EXACTLY TWO PIXELS to the left.
Now proceed to the right. If you did everything correctly, you'll notice some glitched sprites near the stairs on the upper level of the room. This means you will be able to ascend the stairs much higher than you normally can. Simon will climb through the ceiling and appear in the floor of the middle of the next room! Simply jump to the right and proceed onward.
This trick skips about a room and a half, which is a fair amount of walking, and a significant chunk of time in a speedrun. If you're not exactly precise with this trick, there's still a small chance it will work. But performing the trick exactly as shown and detailed here to the pixel guarantees consistency.
