[Synopsis]

This is a play through for Crime Wave, and no cheats were used in the game play. There is a way to beat this game, but you have to save your bullets, rockets, and accumulate lives by massing points or going into rooms give you extra lives. You have to save your resources for the very last level where you will need to expend all your resources. I used the very same method to beat this game back in 1990. I played this game back in mid 1990 on a Leading Technology 386 sx 16 mhz based computer with a integrated standard VGA video adapter. PCs were expensive back in those days, my computer came with a monitor, a printer, 3.5" hd fdd, 5.25" hd fdd, pizza box case, 40 mb hdd, and keyboard, the price tag was about $2705 after taxes back in late 1989. I had to buy the mouse and sound card later, the Microsoft bus mouse with the ISA card was about $100, and the Adlib sound card was about $100.

This game is very much like Narc which was released 2 years before, the game format was very much like Narc by Williams Electronics released for the arcade. Narc had much better graphics compared to Crime Wave released by Access Software for the Amiga, Atari ST, or the IBM PC. Out of the 3 computer ports, the IBM PC with VGA was better than the Amiga and Atari ST versions. If you don't believe me, you can look at the Amiga and Atari ST versions of Crime Wave on Youtube. The PC version had graphics which were more realistic, while the Amiga + Atari ST versions had cartoonish looking graphics. The scaling was a lot smoother on the PC version in VGA mode as well.

All in all, I was a fan of games made by Access Software, and I bought a lot of their games, like Mean Streets, Count Down, and Martian Memorandum. The cinematic scenes were quite good in this game, and the sounds were all generated using standard PC speakers. Access Software was able to use standard PC speakers to emulate real voices, and play music as well. They did have some scenes where you had animations as well, but those scenes were limited due to limitations in storage space. Back in those days, storage space was expensive. Today, we have games with full motion graphics, but back 30 years ago that wasn't common. Most of the times, we had still pictures along with a text a dialogue. This was a characteristic of late 1980s and early 1990s interactive games whether that the Kings Quest series made Sierra, Mean Streets produced by Access Software, or Heart of China developed by Dynamix.
