Crowntakers is a RPG Boardgame of some sorts, where the layout of the board changes on each attempt or playthrough. The story introduction is short, that the King is imprisoned and you a peassant are surprisingly his son and you need to rescue him. So you make your way step by step on a hexadiagonal board. Here you can see the enemy and also their strenght and if you're not ready you have to walk different paths to get past them. But when searching abandoned places like caves old houses, towers etc. you find items for upgrades, gold, healing items, potions and items you can sell for gold. This way you can prepare yoruself for a fight, that seemed impossible to win at first. But each day the strenght of the enemies increases, so you shouldn't hesitate too much. Winning battles not only gives you loot, but also experience points, so after a set of won battles you gain a level and can choose between two options to increase your stats. These stats can be increased critical chance, higher evasion rate, more hp etc.
Based on how long you survive a round can be pretty long. But if the game is too hard, then you can also go with a easier mode, where you keep the level of your previous run. So you have a headstart on your new game. This is a pretty good choice, if you play the game for the storyline. But the game is meant to start your character on level 1 each time you start the game.
Crowntakers isn't very flashy in the design, it's pretty bare boned from how it looks like, but i think that this serves the purpose, since it actually feels like a board game.
