It's finally here! The long awaited Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition has launched with cross-platform online multiplayer, improved graphics, and refined mechanics, meaning it can all only be better, right? Well, you'd think. It turns out Square Enix completely destroyed the very concept of the multiplayer caravan setting out from the same hometown and created a setup even more cumbersome than acquiring 4 Gameboy Advances and 4 link cables for the GameCube in what feels like the biggest letdown of recent remasters. It is now more than ever a forced single-player game with multiplayer skinned down to nothing more than one-off dungeon instances that only advance the story for the "host" player. There is no way to view the roadside events or even visit the hometown with other players, not even on the same console. The new voice acting seems very phoned in, and my entire experience so far (having just played up through Year 6 on the GameCube) has been very clunky.

I love this game dearly and had a few absolutely fantastic multiplayer experiences on the GameCube back in 2003-2004, and it has always been just a few details away from a masterpiece. I feel like this remaster could've finally gave it the push it needed, but instead, it feels like it somehow went the other direction and created something worse. But the core game itself still has something special, and I've been waiting since my review 2-3 years ago to do a Let's Play, so we will bite our tongues and enjoy what it has.
