Crystalis (GBC) - Part 5: Uncomfortably Numb
Nathaniel plays and talks his way through Crystalis for the Game Boy Color, which is a remake of the NES cult classic RPG. Part 5 of 10.
Jack goes back into the water to slash apart more sea creatures for the heck of it, damaging Portoa's crucial fishing industry. He ends up in Joel, the Village of Superfluous Wells, except there's only one well in this version of the game so the nickname kinda doesn't make sense. Jack does his "typical RPG hero" thing all over town, then all over the Angry Sea, until he runs into a locked grate that requires him to do his "typical adventure game hero" thing, unlocking the grate with a necklace. Because THAT makes sense.
Beyond the grate is a cave that ends up being more confusing than it ought to be. After a little longer than necessary, Jack reaches the heart of Evil Spirit Island, where people live in ramshackle houses and walk around like zombies because they haven't had their coffee yet. Or something like that.
Jack enters the nearby imposing fortress where the coffee is being held hostage, is promptly paralyzed by a monster's shadow, and just about dies refighting the first boss of the game. He then accidentally falls into a trap (thinking it's a perfectly predictable section of floor), accidentally starts a fight with the sorceress Sabera after hitting her with his sword (thinking she was a defenseless townsperson), and accidentally ends up rescuing some person named Mesia (thinking she is the coffee he swore to bring back). This is not one of Jack's better days.
Everything works out fine, though, because the townspeople brewed their own coffee while Jack was away, and now they're not zombies anymore. One man, deeply affected by Jack's hardships, hands over a pair of Eyeglasses so that Jack can clearly see the difference between a woman and a pot of coffee.
Jack goes back into the cave to search for anything he might've missed, STILL misses something, and then locates the Wise Guy Kensu in a lighthouse that looks suspiciously like a windmill from the inside. Jack is belittled by Kensu but hands over his missing Love Pendant anyhow (stabbing Kensu in the face out of spite), and is rewarded with...a Glowing Light that can repair broken things. It can be assumed that Kensu cracked open a glow stick, got the goo all over his hands, and then rubbed it off on Jack's sleeve. In turn, Jack will use that goo to fill in the cracks in whatever broken thing he finds next. Which happens to be the Broken Statue in his inventory.
With a newly repaired Statue of Gold in hand, Jack visits a small island with an altar, prays to the god MacGuffin that his statue will get rid of a random whirlpool halfway to the other side of the sea, and ditches his dolphin in favor of a broken old boat that he was planning on fixing with the Glowing Light. Realizing he'd already used it all up, he goes to pout in a cave.
