Cyberpunk 2077 Lockups on Linux/Wine/vkd3d-proton/Nvidia (update : possible workaround)
I tried some further testing with CP2077 and could not make any progress in the game due to hard lockups. Fortunately just the game freezes and the computer doesnt go down. I'm running medium graphics, 1080p res scaled to 2k, at about 25fps on my i6700k+GTX1070. The game looks great and is somewhat playable (barely) at 25 FPS but due to the freezes I can't recommend trying to run it yet as it will destroy the game experience with these frequent hard locks. Hopefully this problem will be resolved soon, it might be just a driver tweak or vkd3d-proton patch is needed to make the game playable on Nvidia. I ran the latest vkd3d-proton master with the CP2077 patch for this test run.
These crashes are expected according to vkd3d-proton devs, I quote from the git comments :
Currently only runs correctly on AMD hardware with RADV and `VK_VALVE_mutable_descriptor_type`.
As of game version 1.03, this requires the latest Mesa Git build.
The game has some fatal bugs where it relies on undefined behavior with descriptor management
which this extension works around by accident.
The game will start and run on NVIDIA, but just like what happens without the extension on AMD,
the GPU will randomly hang, making the game effectively unplayable.
A game update to fix this bug would likely make the game playable on NVIDIA as well.
Game version 1.04 changed some behavior, and support for this game will likely fluctuate over time as future patches come in.
12/20/2020 Update :
I upgraded to v1.05, then added :
export __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE=0
to my launch shell and I was able to make it through the training with my GTX 1070 with no lockups. Frame rates were low 30s on low settings, very playable in the training arena. Will test further over next week. I am running very latest Nvidia driver 455.46.04. Also, do no use wine 6.0-rc3 to apply patch, some regression/bug prevents it from working. I used 6.0-rc1 to completely re-install the game and apply the 1.04 and 1.05 patches with no error messages in either install or patches.
