Daizo's Journey (Cancelled Build) - W2-3 - Above... ...and Away!
32024 revealed the release of "Daizo's Journey ~ Chapter 1: To Rise Above All" and a few people were curious what will happen to the original Daizo's Journey build I started back at around 2011/2012. So I'm releasing videos of what is now going to be known as the "Cancelled Build" which I'll release as a hack at some point in the future. This will document every single finished level I made.
Welcome to Star Fox! Well not quite, this is the last level I heavily tweaked in pursuit of a kind of narrative device that I actually think turned out really neat. But I acknowledge that when you first play the game, you're not going to really read any of the text unless you're watching a video of it (oh hey! hi!), and people don't generally replay levels after their beaten.
Anyway so the whole level's about these "fire bots" that are basically Jinker Bolts' flame chomps, and the first and only story scene in the game where one of the key villains is at play. All the dialogue is very tongue and cheek (take a shot every time there's a reference....don't) because it's pretty clear that Daizoken and Krackenwolf are taking the pi** out of Minion 006. These fire bots soon get replace with a female variant that generates other fire bots (fun fact, they're meant to be golden.) Other than that, it's pretty much a slow autoscroller.
Plan for the future -
Despite the simplicity, this probably has the best "mood" of every level in the game imo. You're pretty much in a battle getting through a level while one of my favourite Touhou tracks play. Literally I'd take this same aesthetic and make a new level: that's it.
