One of the biggest hurdles to get used to for winning invasions is not panicking when your health get's low. Ideally you want to heal before you die and without immediately getting hit for most or more of what you healed. In general it's better to waste a little estus than it is to die with unused estus but you should try not to waste them.

Note how the sunbro died because he didn't secure any space for his heal. Note how I survived because I did secure enough space, albeit it was reliant on their hesitation in following. Now the host had the right idea in attacking me to force me away temporarily before healing but in that instance it might've been best for him/her to burn an estus, even without enough spacing, because the hp lead at that point was too much in my favor.
