Darksiders II (Deathinitive) first playthrough, part 2
1We're heading into the second dungeon, which is somewhat reminiscent of the first game's dungeon design that likes to wrap back around to previously-visited rooms in new ways.
Not only did I get through the second dungeon in this stream, I ran clear through the entirety of the third (despite thinking I wouldn't have time to finish it). I've been surprised at how quick the dungeons have felt this time around.
I've also been surprised at how unremarkable the dungeons' bosses feel from a plot perspective. Back in part 1, I was surprised when the first dungeon was over; I had thought I'd just fought a midboss. (Remember those from the first game?) Dungeons this time around don't seem to involve midbosses, nor do they involve acquiring new forms of progression within.
Whereas the plot of Darksiders 1 very much set us up for notable boss encounters, Darksiders II has been stringing us along incrementally by the seat of our pants. Along with the more ARPG-esque mechanics, the dungeons so far have felt extremely transactional, with plot always drip-fed step by step through quests, and progression seemingly handed out only after each dungeon is completed. I'm not sure how to feel about this change; I reckon that will require seeing just how many of these dungeons exist, and how the plot ultimately pans out.
