Pak Attack: Episode Enyo (2024) [BQTN E204 | PC via Remaster]
My jaw dropped when I saw this announced.
I knew Slave Zero X was making use of the Quake map format and consequently tapping on community veterans, but I did not know Poppy Works gave the team of Greenwood, bmFbr, Kebby, AlekswithaK, and Mazu the blessing and assets necessary to create an actual full-blown Quake mod on top of that - available for free as an add-on to the remaster, or standalone for use with modern source ports.
I've played plenty of Quake mods at this point, but this stands tall among a select few in terms of being a full-blown atmospheric overhaul, including custom enemies, weapons, and soundtrack. I'm still floored that was a freebie as a prequel to Slave Zero X releasing later in February - for my part, I'm much more drawn to FPSes than belt-scroller beat'em'ups.
It's great to see Quake community veterans get to exhibit their work in such a way. I can only hope that stuff like this and the upcoming Wrath are signs that Quake is alive and kicking now more than ever.
