Let's face it. John Marston wasn't getting out of Red Dead Redemption alive. And with Red Dead Redemption 2 hitting shelves and, quite honestly, being amazing, it really got us pining for John's old adventure and the absolute wonder that came with exploring the Wild West for that very first time. Well, second if you count Red Dead Revolver...
So tonight's episode is dedicated to this classic setting. It's called "The Death of the West", and it's a serious, dignified drink that we think perfectly matches the feel of civilisation encroaching on America's rugged wilds. If you love a Manhattan cocktail, you'll love this. Jack has whipped up a twist on the famous recipe by adding gunsmoke - that is, smoke from burning cinnamon powder - to give it that western small town tavern feel.
On one hand we have our civilisation and gentrification with our Manhattan base, and on the other the strong, untempered - but still dignified, in its own way - essence of smoke. It's a nice easy drink to make, and a whole lot of fun, too. Who doesn't love playing with fire?
INGREDIENTS
2 oz bourbon
1 oz red vermouth
2 dash Angostura bitters
Cinnamon powder
HOW DO WE GET SMOKE?
We get our smoke by lighting a small pile of cinnamon powder on fire - don't worry, it only smoulders, it won't set aflame - and then tipping our Manhattan glass over the top of it. This will fill the glass with a thick, lusciously blue smoke that then infuses into the beverage as we pour.
